Ghodaghodi Tal

Most highways cut through forests; this one passes right beside a string of lakes. Ghodaghodi Tal, in the sal forests of Kailali, is the largest natural lake system in Nepal's lowlands, a maze of open water, reed beds and floating vegetation.
Wildlife
In winter the lakes fill with ducks, herons, jacanas and cormorants. Mugger crocodiles live here, and the wetland is important for rare freshwater turtles. The forest around the lakes links the Chure hills with the lowlands, and tigers, leopards and elephants use it as a corridor.
The temple and the name
A temple on the main lake's shore is a focus for local Tharu and hill communities, with a large fair during festivals. The name Ghodaghodi — 'horse and mare' — is linked to local legend.
Visiting
Stop on the highway at Sukhad, walk the lakeshore paths, take a boat out among the lilies, and watch the birds from the viewing points. Early morning is best.
