The birthday of Rama, on the ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra, is celebrated with a huge fair, processions and fasting in Janakpur, centred on the Ram Mandir and the Janaki Mandir.
In Janakpur, Rama is the city's son-in-law, and his birthday is celebrated with enthusiasm. Devotees fast, temples hold special worship at midday — the hour of Rama's birth — and processions with chariots and music move through the streets.
A large fair fills the area around the Ram Mandir, with pilgrims arriving from across Madhesh and Bihar. It is also the end of the spring Navaratri, known as Chaite Dashain.
